CALACO Summary
CALACO is a data conversion program for scientists. If you want to know how many pounds in 790 kilograms, or how many gallons in 49 liters, CALACO is the program for you. Of special interest to chemists is a feature to calculate boiling points at reduced pressures and a density calculator. CALACO performs conversions in the following categories:
Acceleration | Pressure |
Angle | Speed |
Area | Temperature |
Energy | Time |
Length | Volume |
Power | Weight |
CALACO
provides pop-up definitions for each unit. Sometimes a unit may be used in two
different measurement systems. For example the "pound" can be a British pound, a
US pound, or even an apothecaries pound that was used in pharmacy measurements
and is now obsolete. If you are confused about a unit in
CALACO
simply click the Unit Definition
button and a full definition is displayed.

Conversions
CALACO has a convenient user friendly interface which allows you
to view all conversions for a given category on the same screen. You simply enter one
value, and the values in the corresponding units are calculated and displayed.

Some CALACO conversion screens have unique features. The Angle
conversion screen not only displays the angle value in the units available, but also
provides a graphical representation. Another unique feature is the Degree: Minute: Second
unit that can be input or calculated.
Time conversions can be a problem because the number of days in a year is not
constant. CALACO solves this problem by calculating and displaying the possible
number of leap years in a given period. The user can select the number of leap years to
allow for an accurate calculation, or use average 365.25 day years.

Boiling Point Calculations
The Boiling Point calculation is a unique feature for scientists. This option estimates
the boiling point of liquids at various pressures. These calculations are based on
standard nomographs. The accuracy of the calculation can be increased by selecting
structurally similar compound groups. CALACO provides a list of
boiling points and densities of common materials.

calculations.
Any two of the following three values may be input and the third value is calculated:
- Boiling Point at 760 mmHg
- Boiling Point (at the designated pressure)
- Pressure
Density Calculations
CALACO provides a Density calculation option. The density of a
liquid can be selected from a list of over 200 common materials, or it can be input
manually. Next you simply input a weight or volume, and the corresponding volume or weight
is calculated.

screen.
Materials List
CALACO provides a list of over 1000 Materials and the following information for these materials:
- Material Name
- Molecular Formula
- Molecular Weight
- Density, Concentration, or Weight Percent
- Melting Point
- Boiling Point
- Pressure
- Miscellaneous Information

ICALACO provides a mechanism for adding new materials or editing existing Materials. To use the materials list, follow the instructions in the help file.
Miscellaneous Features
CALACO includes a list of SI Prefixes with values, names, and
symbols. Did you ever wonder how many bytes in a gigabyte? The SI table shows you that a
"giga" is 1,000,000,000.
Values can be displayed in scientific notation or floating decimal format. The
conversion factors used by
CALACO
are consistent with published values including those of the National Institute of
Standards and Technology.
An extensive tutorial is include with
CALACO and this is the best
way to learn how to use the program.

If you are using Windows 7 as your operating system, please read the following:
If you are running Windows 7, make sure you run CALACO as Administrator. To do this, right click the CALACO icon that you use to start the program. Click "Run as admnistrator." Do this the first time you run CALACO. After that it should run as administrator by just double clicking the icon. To check and see if the icon will startup CALACO as Administrator, right click on the icon and click the Properties menu item and then the Compatibility tab and at the bottom make sure the "Run this program as administrator" check box is checked. If not, click it and click OK. You need to do this with every CALACO icon you run CALACO from so that in all cases you CALACO run as administrator.
